THE BEST BREWERIES IN CANADA FOR 2024
Welcome to our favourite time of year: the moment we tally up the results from the Canada Beer Cup and the Canadian Brewing Awards to reveal the top brewery in each province, unveil the Best Beer in Canada, and crown the Overall Best Brewery in the country for 2024! This marks our second annual breakdown and this year we are diving deep into the 363 national awards presented across both prestigious competitions to find out who comes out on top.
On October 18th, the Canada Beer Cup, organized by the Canadian Craft Brewers Association, marked its third year of celebrating standout breweries from coast to coast, with a 2024 gala hosted in New Westminster, B.C. In contrast, the Canadian Brewing Awards, held annually in May, have a much longer history, dating back to 2000. This event, organized by TAPS Media in Houston U.S.A., has been showcasing brewing excellence for over two decades. Both competitions rely on panels of national and international judges accredited by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), who blind-taste over a thousand brews across 120 categories, evaluating them based on the 2021 BJCP guidelines. But one of these contests comes with an added perk. The winner of the Canada Beer Cup, along with two runners-up, will receive free entry into the worlds most prestigious beer judging event, the World Beer Cup, and by the time we are done here, we think we know who it will be.
Events like the Canada Beer Cup and the Canadian Brewing Awards, which are the country's most recognized beer judging competitions, honour the skill and passion of brewers from coast to coast who dedicate themselves to crafting exceptional beers. Winning an award not only validates all of their hard work and creativity, but it also highlights their commitment to quality and innovation among their peers. It’s these marks of distinction that set the best brewers apart, showcasing their mastery of the craft.
For many breweries, especially small or new ones, receiving recognition on such a grand scale can be a game-changer. A prestigious award can launch a brewery into the spotlight, boosting media exposure, brand visibility, and attracting new customers. These awards serve as trusted endorsements, encouraging consumers to explore and trust a brewery’s products.
Beer awards also act as a guide for the consumer, offering a benchmark for different styles and helping beer lovers navigate the growing landscape of craft beer options. An award-winning beer is a reliable, rewarding choice—offering the assurance of quality and a memorable drinking experience.
Last year, Blindman Brewing from Lacombe, Alberta, took home the title of Best Overall Brewery in Canada, earning eight national medals, including four for a single beer that was crowned Best Beer in Canada for 2023. Curious to see last year’s full results? Click here.
This year, Blindman Brewing returns. Can they defend their championship with back-to-back wins? With 21 breweries collecting four or more medals this year, there is some fierce competition.
Many of last year’s provincial winners have also returned to the competition—can they hold onto their titles?
British Columbia’s breweries had a particularly strong showing this year, taking home an impressive 33% of all available national awards. Could the overall winner come from the West Coast? Or, will there be a surprising twist?
Join us as we reveal the winners and break down the results by province, celebrating the vibrant craft beer community that continues to thrive across Canada!

It’s important to note that not every brewery participates in these national competitions. For our list, we’ve focused solely on the results from the Canada Beer Cup and the Canadian Brewing Awards. While some provinces may not have their own provincial competitions, these national accolades offer a broad snapshot of the best in Canadian brewing. However, there are many small, local breweries that may not have entered but still produce outstanding beers worthy of recognition. The best way you can support your local breweries is by visiting their taprooms and enjoying the unique brews they offer!
Here we go.
Best Beer in Canada for 2024
This year, determining the winner of the Best Beer in Canada proved to be a bit challenging, as 17 different breweries each won two awards for the same beer. Under normal circumstances, this would lead to a 17-way tie. However, since we need to pick just one winner, we’ll be revealing the ultimate tie-breaker a bit later. For now, let's take a moment to recognize these outstanding contenders and their exceptional brews.
If you spot any of these beers on the shelf at your local store, be sure to give them a try!

Best Breweries by Province for 2024
Alberta
Last year, Blindman Brewing claimed the title of 2023 Best Overall Brewery in Alberta. This year, however, a Calgary institution has taken top honours. At last week's Alberta Brewing Awards, this brewery won four awards—second most in the province. While some of those accolades were for their well-known non-alcoholic beers, it was their core lineup that stole the spotlight on the national stage.
Founded in 2013 by Graham Sherman, Tool Shed Brewery, like many others, began as a backyard hobby—in this case, in an actual tool shed. Today, Tool Shed is a household name throughout Alberta and much of Western Canada.

Tool Shed’s ambitions don’t stop at beer. Just last week, Sherman and his team travelled to Lynchburg, Tennessee, where their in-house BBQ team, "The Notorious P.I.G.," represented Canada at the prestigious Jack Daniels World BBQ Championship and they won 1st place in their category (well technically 2nd, but only because they tied for first place, and lost a coin flip to determine who won first. Still 1st place in our books)! With another BBQ comp in Kansas City coming up, October has been quite a month for the team at Tool Shed and Notorious P.I.G.

With a province leading total of five national awards this year, Tool Shed Brewery can now officially be crowned Alberta's Best Overall Brewery for the 2024.

Tool Shed’s Awards:
Canadian Brewing Award - Gold - Zero People Skills - No to Low Alcohol Beer
Canada Beer Cup - Bronze - Flat Cap - North American Stout
Canada Beer Cup - Bronze - Pete's Pils - Czech Pale Lager (SVÄ›TLý LEžáK)
Canada Beer Cup - Bronze -Rampaging Red - Strong American Ale
Canada Beer Cup - Silver -Tool Shed Hoped Wheat Ale - North American Pale Ale

British Columbia
With over 200 breweries, it's no surprise that British Columbia consistently ranks among the top winners in Canadian award counts. Last year, B.C. breweries claimed 124 medals, and this year, they outdid themselves with 127. Representing about 20% of Canada’s more than 1,000 craft breweries, B.C. plays a significant role in the national craft beer scene.

Last year’s provincial winner, Parallel 49 Brewing from Vancouver, earned seven national awards, and while they managed to take home a respectable four medals this year, another brewery you may have heard of has claimed the top spot.
The title of Best Overall Brewery in British Columbia for 2024 goes to Deadfall Brewing of Prince George, last year’s winner of the Canada Beer Cup.

Deadfall Brewing secured six national awards this year, the second-highest total in the country, narrowly missing out on the top spot. Perhaps most impressive is that they only opened in 2022, making their rapid success even more remarkable.
Located just a "short" nine-hour drive north of Vancouver (or Calgary), Deadfall Brewing is a cozy, community-focused brewery founded by a group of friends with a passion for beer. Their mission is to craft high-quality, small-batch beer with a focus on sustainability, while honoring the traditional, unceded territories of the Lheidli T'enneh people in what is now Prince George.
Deadfall’s Awards:
Canada Beer Cup - Bronze - Belgian Dark Strong - Dark Belgian Strong Ale
Canada Beer Cup - Bronze - Aurora Session Pale Ale - Session Hazy / NEIPA
Canada Beer Cup - Bronze - Basal Brown Ale - North American Brown Ale
Canadian Brewing Award - Gold - Dark Mild - Session Ale
Canada Beer Cup - Silver - Dark Mild - Brown British Ale
Canada Beer Cup - Gold - Succession NEIPA - Hazy Pale Ale / NEIPA

Manitoba
Last year, Obsolete Brewing from Dauphin, Manitoba, made waves by winning three medals at the Canada Beer Cup, earning them the title of the province’s top award winner for 2023 on the national stage. This year, they’re back in the spotlight, but are now sharing it with another deserving Winnipeg brewery.
Despite being barely two years old, Obsolete has already cemented its reputation as one of Manitoba's leading breweries and we may be seeing their name in these types of events for a long time.

Tied with Obsolete at three national medals is Low Life Barrel House, a Winnipeg-based brewery that launched in 2019. Known for its innovative approach, Low Life blends minimalist and ancient brewing techniques to craft unique beers, ciders, and even wines, further elevating Manitoba's craft beverage scene.

Obsolete’s Awards:
Canada Beer Cup - Silver - Game Over DIPA64 - Strong American Ale

New Brunswick
In 2023 there were a trio of breweries in New Brunswick that took home two medals each, resulting in a three-way tie. This year, it was a brewery set to celebrate its tenth anniversary at their taproom that leads the way by collecting Gold and Silver at the Canadian Brewing Awards.
Located in the province’s capital city of Fredericton, Grimross owners Stephen and Dawn originally began brewing beer and making wine in the 90’s while living in Vernon, B.C. More than two decades later, and back in New Brunswick, the pair continue to share their passion for craft products by offering a wide array of beers and ciders.

Grimross' Awards:
Canadian Brewing Award - Silver - Maritime IPA - English Style India Pale Ale
Canadian Brewing Award - Gold - Diggin' Oat Stout - Oatmeal Stout

Last Year’s Winner - Three-way Tie. Foghorm Brewing Company, Trailway Brewing Co., Pumphouse Brewery

Newfoundland and Labrador
There are only about two dozen breweries located in Newfoundland and Labrador, but that doesn’t stop local breweries there from popping up in national award shows. This year there were two breweries from opposite sides of the island that brought home the province's only national awards.
Dildo Brewing Company & Museum which is located in Dildo about 2 hours west of St. John’s started back in 2018 with local brother and sister Angie Reid and Roger George. Together with their spouses Rob and Debbie, they set out to bring craft beer to the community.

Back in 2016, there were not many breweries operating within Newfoundland, let alone near Dildo. For some strange reason (wink), Dildo has always been a popular attraction for visitors but that became even more true when the waterfront town was featured on Jimmy Kimmel.

As lifelong residents of Dildo, the group realised the community lacked representation from a historical standpoint, so they decided to put together a museum in the brewery that celebrates the areas heritage.

Across the rock, Rough Waters was founded by Newfoundlanders Jennie O'Keefe and Christopher Johnson in early 2020. While O'Keefe and Johnson make several styles of beer including IPA’s, Porters and Wheat beers, it was their Sour that brought home a national accolade. The taproom at Rough Waters is temporarily closed, but here’s hoping the doors open again soon so beer lovers can stop in for a taste of this award winning brew.

Dildo Brewing Co. & Museum's Awards: - Canadian Brewing Award - Silver - Under Da' Sea - Imperial Stout
Rough Waters Brewing Co.'s Awards:- Canadian Brewing Award - Bronze - Sou'Wester - German-Style Sour Ale

Last Year’s Winner - Secret Cove Brewing Co.

Northwest Territories
A homebrew kit, gifted to Fletcher Stevens by his wife Miranda for Christmas, quickly turned a simple hobby into a full-blown passion. After earning medals in several national homebrew competitions, in 2012, Fletcher felt ready to pursue his brewing dreams. By January 2014, Fletcher and Miranda both left their full-time jobs to become business owners. Fletcher took on the role of Brewmaster while Miranda became General Manager, and together, they founded the territory’s only brewery.
In their first year of operations at NWT Brewing Company and Woodyard Brewhouse & Eatery, their signature beer, Kicksled Cream Ale, won a Bronze medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards, putting them, and NWT, on Canada’s craft beer map. Since then, the Woodyard Brewhouse & Eatery has become a cornerstone of the Yellowknife community and was recognized as one of Canada’s top 50 bars in 2018.

In 2022, Fletcher and Miranda expanded their brewing operations into a larger facility with plans to reach broader markets.

This year at the Canadian Brewing Awards, NWT Brewing Co. once again grabbed a Bronze for their often awarded, Kicksled Cream Ale.

NWT’s Awards:
Canadian Brewing Award - Bronze - Kicksled Cream Ale - Cream Ale
Last Year’s Winner: N/A

Nova Scotia
As if collecting three Golds and being named 2024 Canadian Brewery of the Year at the Canadian Brewing Awards wasn't enough, this brewery decided it also needed a Canada Beer Cup trophy to squeeze into the display case.
While Tatamagouche Brewing Co., Nova Scotia Overall Best Brewery for 2023 collected four medals this year, they were narrowly edged out in 2024 by another fishing town with a population of less than 2,000 people.

It was Boxing Rock Brewing Co. of Shelburne who reeled in five national awards, tied for the third most in Canada this year, including being named as the best in the country by the CBAC.

Founded by a husband and wife duo of chemical engineers, Boxing Rock has been making Nova Scotia proud since 2012. Their quaint brewery located in Loyalist Plaza casts a wide net when deciding what styles to brew. Everything from lagers to ales to sours and wheat beers and even imperial stouts can be found on a visit to their taproom.

Boxing Rocks’ Awards:
Canadian Brewing Award - Gold - IPA - American Style India Pale Ale
Canadian Brewing Award - Gold - Puck Off - North American Style Blonde or Golden Ale
Canadian Brewing Award - Gold - Temptation Red Ale - North American Style Amber/Red Ale
Canadian Brewing Award - CANADIAN BREWERY OF THE YEAR

Ontario
In 2024, thirteen breweries from Canada’s most populous province earned multiple awards. Six breweries took home two awards each, two won three awards, and four claimed four awards each—remarkable achievements across the board. However, one brewery stood out, winning more national trophies than any other and becoming the only one on this list to secure a 2024 World Beer Cup. This extraordinary success crowns them the Best Overall Brewery in Ontario in 2024.
Floral Hall of Ottawa who tied as the province's top brewery last year with four medals is back again. This time they have one more, and this time they are alone. The Flora Hall Brewery which won a Silver at the recent World Beer Cup for their English Ordinary Bitter is in a very cool and historic building that was constructed in 1927 and operated as various auto mechanic shops until 2016. The interior contains eye-catching features of dark woods and metal throughout. Flora Hall has a large selection of beer and a food menu and should be a stop for anyone going to visit Canada’s capital.

The PEI Brewing Company was established in 2013 but falls under the umbrella of Murphy’s Hospitality Group. If you have ever been to the Island, you have likely stopped into Gahan House for some of their Gahan beers. Well, those beers, along with the brands Beach Chair Lager which lays claim as being the first canned craft beer in Atlantic Canada, and Colliding Tides Craft Cocktails are all made by the PEI Brewing Co.

P.E.I. Brewing Co.'s Award:

Quebec
Breweries from Quebec took home 30 of the available 363 awards across the country this year. Microbrasseries all over that province have been crafting excellent brews over the years with many being recognized on the world stage. At the 2024 World Beer Cup, an event hosted by the brewing industry, Quebec breweries Siboire, Unibroue, Microbrasserie La Souche, La Knowlton Co. and 3 Brasseurs all took medals while battling industry heavyweights such as Hoegaarden, Deschutes and Sierra Nevada. However, it was another recognizable name that grabbed this years title.

If you happened to catch our 2023 recap, then you will be familiar with this name. Frampton Brasse of Frampton Quebec, has won our title of Best Overall brewery in Quebec for a second year in a row! Located a quick one hour drive south from Quebec City, Frampton Brasse may be one of the coolest looking breweries in Canada. Located on a farm, Frampton has been brewing nearly two dozen styles of beer since 2011. Last year the team collected six national awards, this year they received four, narrowly taking the title away from three other Quebec breweries.

Saskatchewan
This year’s Best Overall Brewery in Canada AND Best Beer in Canada for 2024 hails from a province that garnered just 13 of the available 363 national awards, with 7 of them going to the 2024 winner of the most national awards across the country.
Having only been open for five years, returning 2023 Saskatchewan Champion Pile O’ Bones has quickly established themselves as not only the top brewery in the province, but as a national leader as well. The brewery’s name pays tribute to the Indigenous people who called the area Oskana Kasastcki which roughly translates to ‘bone piles’.

Founded by Josh Morrison, Brent Babyak, Nathan Kary, and Glenn Valgardsonin in 2016, the Regina Brewery is located only a few short steps away from Mosaic Stadium, home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Their taproom, which seats around 50 inside and 50 outside, has pinball machines and offers 32 taps, some of their own, and the rest pouring brews from craft breweries across Saskatchewan. POB features a menu provided by OxPecker, a sister restaurant to Swift Current’s Nightjar Diner. POB is also verified by SaskMétis Economic Development Corporation as a Métis owned business.

Last summer, Pile O’ Bones, which started as a home brew operation, merged their operations with another famous brewery from the province that also home brewed and that they were friends with, Nokomis Craft Ales. While both breweries continue to operate independently, the partnership allows for greater flexibility in sales and distribution, enhancing their reach and efficiency across the province. Like many friendship-breweries, the two also collaborated on a beer, which leads us to our next section.

BEST OVERALL BEER IN CANADA - Belgian Witbier - Quark Strangeness & Charm

This year, Pile O’ Bones collected a Gold and the Canada Beer Cup for their Belgian Witbier - Quark Strangeness & Charm which they collaborated on with Nokomis. While this ties them with both Corsaire Microbrasserie of Quebec whose Dark Mild also won a Gold and was named Best in Show at the Canadian Brewing Awards and 15 other breweries who also won two awards for one beer, POB accumulated the most awards overall in the country, so in fairness, the scales have tipped in their favour.

BEST OVERALL BREWERY IN CANADA

Pile O’ Bones brought home 7 awards on the national stage this year, which is more than any other brewery in the country. For this reason, we are naming Pile O' Bones as the Best Brewery in Canada for 2024. While they collected two Golds, three Silvers and a Bronze between both competitions, they also received the country's highest brewing honour, being named the winner of the Canada Beer Cup.

Pile O' Bones Awards:

WORLD BEER CUP ENTRANTS
The winner of the Canada Cup and two runners- up will now get their entry into next year's World Beer Cup sponsored by the Canadian Craft Brewers Association. This event will take place on May 1, 2025 in Indiana and our representatives will face competition from the likes of Allagash, Hoegaarden, Deschutes, Formula, and Sierra Nevada.

By our count, this means that Pile O' Bones is headed south along with Deadfall Brewing who collected the most (5) Canada Beer Cups. It is the third spot however that could be a coin flip. Blindman Brewing, Tool Shed, and Tin Whistle all had four Cups, although Blindman was the only one of those three to win a Gold Cup, in fact, they won 3 of them. So, on our end this is our prediction for the all-star team that is being sent to the U.S. by the Canadian Craft Brewers Association.

Team Canada: Pile 'O Bones, Deadfall & Blindman. Now that is a tasty line up. Imagine if the three got together to make a 'super beer'. Alberta water, B.C. hops and Saskatchewan malts. What would they call it?
Fantasy's aside, it should be said that any brewery can enter the World Beer Cup and in 2024 there were thirteen Canadian breweries who won awards at the world's most prestigious beer judging competition.

Who's ready for a beer?
This year's results featured a mix of newcomers, returning champions, and delightful surprises, all highlighting the creativity and craftsmanship that define Canadian breweries. From bold flavours to innovative techniques, 2024 has proven to be a landmark year for Canadian beer lovers and brewers alike.

Congratulations not only to Pile O' Bones and all breweries who were able to collect awards this year, but to any brewer who is out there doing their thing and living their dream. Whether that is at a brewery or in their basement. People don't just start brewing beer because it's a cool job (it's a lot of hard work), they do it because they are passionate and genuinely interested in all things beer. Keep that in mind next time you are out for a cold one.
We hope you enjoyed our breakdown of the best breweries and beer in Canada for 2024. For us, it was both exciting and enlightening but more importantly, it has made us exceptionally thirsty and we think it's time for a road trip to Regina! We got a van, who's coming?
