Calgary’s newest brewery, Buffalo 9 Brewing and taproom is set to open in less than two weeks and the team at YYCTOURS got to have a sneak-peek behind the curtain with husband and wife owners Kelsey and Lane.
Update- Buffalo 9 is now open.
Drawing on inspiration from a long family line of military and first responders, Buffalo 9 Brewing pays homage to those who have, and those who currently do serve in our militaries and public service sectors.
Located on the edges of Killarney and Richmond, Buffalo 9 is located in a former post office with a sprawling 6800 sq. ft. open space concept sure to be a community hub for residents in those areas. Although the walk is a little bit long, you can also access 2 other breweries from here as is shown in our article on Five Walkable Calgary Brewery Districts here https://www.yyctours.ca/new-calgary-brewery-tour-districts.
Lane and Kelsey who did almost all of the renovations themselves while juggling full time jobs and a family have installed a 10 BBL system, designed and built by Northern Republic and have officially started brewing beer in-house. Buffalo 9 is also contract brewing at a couple locations around Alberta to meet the demand for some of their already award winning beer, but every couple weeks a new beer made at B9 is added to the rotation.
The recent build also includes room for a future kitchen which the owners hope will bring the community together over beers and great snacks. For now, B9 has been bringing in food pop-ups almost weekly and the neighbours have been flooding this huge space in droves. The team also offers quite a few events like trivia, paint nights and puppy adoption events.
The current line-up of beer from Buffalo 9, includes 6 core beers that are named to reflect their military theme, most of which having already won provincial awards. The Ridge By Midway NEIPA was the first beer Lane and Kelsey sent to market in 2020. That was followed by The Peril In The Atlantic Pilsner, The Fighting Season Pale Ale, Dear Aunt Emma Mango Passionfruit Wheat Ale, The Sisters In The Sky Chocolate Stout and First In Last Out Red Ale.
During our special sneak-a-peek visit, which came before Buffalo 9 received sign off on liquor service we did not get to sample these beers. BUT, we will soon and will be sure to update this post.
UPDATE- we got to sample beers!!! Peril in the Atlantic German Pils is without question one of our favourite beers in town right now. German Pils tend to offer a bit more hop character than Czech Pilsners and this version was pretty much perfect to the definition of what should be expected from a German Pils.
If Buffalo 9 sounds like the kind of place you would like to visit on a Calgary Brewery Tour with YYCTOURS, please let us know. If Beer is not your thing, we also offer the city's only Wine tour as well as curated distillery tours.
