YYCTOURS - Calgary Brewery ToursÂ
Vaycay Brewing Co. Review - Oct 14, 2023Â
This weekend we stopped into Vaycay Brewing, a relatively new Calgary brewery located in the Garrison Woods district. Vaycay Brewing shares a space with Veranda restaurant and Burwood Distilling, so needless to say, they offer something for everyone.
Our visit took place on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It was a very busy spot with families, dogs, birthday parties and lots of sun. The patio, which faces due south is nestled between two ells, one east and one west that block most wind, leaving a very warm and comfortable spot to spend an afternoon. The patio also features a fire pit that gets lit up as the temperature dips.
The Veranda At The Stables food menu is wide-ranging and was designed by founder, brewer and executive chef Andrew Gass, who took his love of cooking to the Olds College Brewing program. The space itself is large and located in a former military stable. Much of the original architecture, materials and finishings remains untouched. Since Vaycay opened in Spring of 2023, it seems to be getting busier and busier everytime we stop in. Unlike some breweries in Calgary, Vaycay is a very inviting, comfortable and relaxing place to sit for an afternoon and have a few brews. The vibe is very laid back and a true melting pot of food, drinks and people. The host and greeter was in a three piece suit, a server was in baggy jogging pants and the bartenders wore standard black. The clientele was also very diverse from guests sitting at the bar to watch the game, to families having large meals in the corner and birthday parties renting out one of the large spaces that Vaycay offers. To us, a true craft brewery is a spot where the community comes together in a friendly and non-judgmental place, and Vaycay fits that bill nicely.
Vaycay offers 6 of their own beers on tap, as well as a variety of cocktails and drinks from Burwood Distilling. After having tried all the beers on more than one occasion, we discovered a secret menu item that blew our socks off! The El Speedo. A 50/50 blend of the Tangerine Speedo NEIPA and El Hefe Hefeweizen makes for a full bodied beer reminiscent of a Belgian IPA. Served in a tulip glass, this beer is one of our favourites in town.
The Garrison district is also home to Wild Rose Brewery and the soon to open, Buffalo 9 brewery not far away. This triad will create a great new walkable brewery district, as YYCTOURS covered here.
